Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Offers RCA Dome Material to Artists

Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. is calling on all schools, artists, neighborhoods and non-profit organizations to re-use the RCA Dome roof material in an effort to build community and display art around our city. We want the roof, under which the Indianapolis Colts once played and many other special events took place, to become a medium for local artists, a canvas for school classrooms, matter used to create artistic products, and countless other ideas that are just waiting to unfold with your involvement.

Categories
1) School Art
2) Product Art
3) Visual Art

The "School Art" division is open only to schools (elementary, middle, or high school). The requirements for the "school art" category are as follows:
-minimum of 10 participants working on the project, no maximum
-must benefit the school or community
-must have a primary contact person assigned to the project
-must re-use the dome material, but other materials, such as hardware may also be used in the project
-first 5 school groups to apply will be awarded $50 "start-up" money to facilitate the project

The "Product Art" category is available to anyone. The requirements for the "product art" category are as follows:
-must produce some type of functional art, such as a lunch box, a backpack, a roof for a structure, a bench, a cooler, etc.
-must re-use the dome material, but other materials, such as hardware may also be used in the project
-first 5 applicants will receive $25 "start up" money to facilitate the project

The "Visual Art/Sculptural" category is open to anyone. The requirements for the "visual art/sculptural" category are as follows:
-must be able to display the art in a public place, such as a park, a school, a community center, etc.
-must re-use the dome material, but other materials, such as hardware may also be used in the project
-first 5 applicants will receive $25 "start up" money to facilitate the project

-made of Teflon-coated fiberglass
-cannot be painted on, but can be inked on
-each applicant will receive a minimum of a 10 ft. by 10 ft. section and can request more as needed

2/1/10: Applications available on-line and at Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) office
2/26/10: Applications due at KIB office
3/5/10: Notice sent to applicants selected to participate in contest
Before 3/19/10: Pick up dome material from KIB office (please contact Andrew Brake to arrange for pick-up at 317.938.1199)
5/15/10: Project completed and submitted to KIB
6/11/10: Winners chosen
9/3/09: Selected art pieces on display for "First Friday" event at KIB

Indianapolis Zoo’s Eighth Annual Naturally Inspired Paint Out

Be inspired to create beautiful artwork while supporting the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens! The Indianapolis Zoo, a not-for-profit organization, is seeking artists to participate in the Naturally Inspired Paint Out, our eighth annual “en plein air” event. The Naturally Inspired Paint Out is an opportunity for artists to gain professional exposure while helping support the important conservation and education goals of the Indianapolis Zoo. In addition to showcasing their work to tens of thousands of Zoo members and guests at the Naturally Inspired Art Show, selected artists will be given a $100 stipend.

A panel of distinguished judges will select from the applicant group fifteen artists to participate.
Selections will be juried based on creativity, integrity of work, sensitivity to and understanding of the subject.

For consideration in the Naturally Inspired event, please submit the following:
• Brief letter stating interest in the Naturally Inspired event;
• Biographical resume;
• The Naturally Inspired Paint Out Entry Form;
• Three (3) examples of recent work (slides, photos, color reproductions, or digital images).
Each image must contain the artist’s name, title, medium, size and date;
• Entry applications must be submitted by 5pm on Monday, March 15.

Event Details:
The artist may choose any area, plant or animal of the Zoo or White River Gardens that inspires them—from roses in the DeHaan Tiergarden to elephants in the Plains Biome. Finished pieces will be donated to the Zoo and can be turned in that day or by end of day Tuesday, May 4. Subsequently, the finished works of art will be framed (if needed) and go on display as the Naturally Inspired Paint Out Exhibit in the White River Gardens from June-August 2010 Each piece of art will be silent auctioned as a fundraiser for the Zoo.

Naturally Inspired Paint Out Day: May 1 (8:30am start)
• Artists will be responsible for bringing supplies on Zoo grounds.
• Artists must stay on main pathways.
• A box lunch will be provided to artists participating in the event.
• Artwork should be no smaller than 12” x 12” and no larger than 24” x 36”.
• Artwork may be turned in by 4:30pm or taken home and returned by Tuesday, May 4.

Naturally Inspired Art Show: June 1-August 25
Naturally Inspired Art Show exhibition, in partnership with The Great Frame Up of Indianapolis,
will hang in the Schaefer Rotunda of White River Gardens.
Silent Auction & Artist’s Reception: August 26; 5:30-7:30pm

Artists will receive two (2) complimentary tickets to the Naturally Inspired Silent Auction

Artist’s Reception presented by The Great Frame Up. Artists will be encouraged to mingle with
members, donors and guests and discuss their artwork.

Hoosier Artists Encouraged to Apply for IAC Individual Artist Program Grants

The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced today that Hoosier artists in selected disciplines have until February 1, 2010 to submit applications for the IAC’s Individual Artist Program (IAP) grant.

Artists are encouraged to thoroughly read the program guidelines on the IAC website, and note there are significant changes in artistic disciplines that will be accepted for application during the next grant period.

Eligible projects will only be considered in the areas of: crafts, design art, media arts, photography, visual arts, and folk arts related to the traditional disciplines listed here. The new, federally-funded Artist Access Program that encourages participation by artists with disabilities will also be included within the IAP guidelines and application process.

Individual artists living and working in Indiana may apply for up to $2,000 from the IAP grant, which requires no matching funds. The grants are intended to assist artists with specific project-related costs that will help them further their career and provide significant public benefit through the completed project.

Applicants must be 18 years of age, must be an Indiana resident for at least one year prior to the date of the application, and plan to remain in the state for the full grant period. Artists may not be enrolled in a degree-granting program. All projects must be completed between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011.

A detailed explanation of the IAP program, and grant guidelines are available on the IAC website. Artists should be aware that the application for IAP grants must be submitted online utilizing the IAC’s online grants system.

Qualified citizen review panels, selected by the IAC, will evaluate applications during discipline-specific panel meetings convened by the IAC. The panels examine each application based upon criteria which includes the quality of the artist’s work, the impact the project will have on the artist’s career development, public benefit from the project, and feasibility of the project completion in the specified period of time.

A series of application workshops have also been planned. A complete listing of dates, times and locations can also be found on the IAC website.

More than 200 artists applied for Individual Artists Program grants last year and 33 projects received IAC funding.

Indiana Arts Commission announces grant to artists with disabilities

Hello!

I wanted to share the below information with you regarding a one-time opportunity the IAC has for artists with disabilities. We have received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts to offer a special category called the Artist Access category as part of our Individual Artist Program grant (IAP). Funded artists will receive an IAP grant the same as anyone who receives a grant in any other category. The purpose of this grant category is to grow the careers of artists with disabilities, many of whom are either emerging artists and/or have never written or received a grant award. Please note, if you are an artist with a disability the choice is yours to apply to this category or to apply under the general discipline category. However, there is specific funding set aside for this category unlike the other categories of the IAP program (visual arts, crafts, etc.).

The Access workshops listed below will be geared towards first time grant writers and will also feature some helpful tips and insights from artist Wug Laku who recently received a Creative Renewal Grant. Call to Artists: The Children's Museum of Indianapolis Celebrates Black History Month

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is celebrating Black History Month by having special programming each Saturday. On Saturday, Feb. 21^st from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. they will highlight local African American artists at the museum. Each artists will be given 1-2 tables and easels to display their work to families at the museum. They would also like the artists to share their artists’ statements and other philosophies surrounding their work.

Although unpaid, this is a great opportunity for artists to advertise their work to a large audience. Artists are encouraged to bring brochures, business cards, and other information to give to the museum visitors. This is a great opportunity to reach approximately 6000 visitors in one day.
