Indianapolis Zoo: Naturally Inspired Paint Out Events

Naturally Inspired Paint Out Events - 2010


On May 1, 2010, the Indianapolis Zoo held Naturally Inspired Paint Out Day on the Zoo and White River Gardens grounds. Artists painted any subject of their choosing, en plein air. 




  • June 1-August 25, 2010 - Paint Out Art Exhibit, in partnership with The Great Frame Up of Indianapolis, White River Gardens, Schaefer Rotunda, White River Gardens


  • August 26, 2010 - Silent Auction & Artists Reception in partnership with The Great Frame Up of Indianapolis, 5:30-7:30pm, Hulman Riverhouse, White River Gardens
The artworks have been framed and hung by The Great Frame Up and are hung on display in the Schaefer Rotunda at the Gardens throughout the rest of the summer for the public to enjoy at their leisure. On August 26, the public is again invited to attend a silent auction and artists reception inside the Hulman Riverhouse at the Gardens.  These beautiful and inspiring works of art will be sold to the highest bidders, while all attendees will be able to speak with the artists themselves about their work and the process of painting in the open air.  All proceeds benefit the Indianapolis Zoo.

Indianapolis Zoo’s Eighth Annual Naturally Inspired Paint Out

Be inspired to create beautiful artwork while supporting the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens! The Indianapolis Zoo, a not-for-profit organization, is seeking artists to participate in the Naturally Inspired Paint Out, our eighth annual “en plein air” event. The Naturally Inspired Paint Out is an opportunity for artists to gain professional exposure while helping support the important conservation and education goals of the Indianapolis Zoo. In addition to showcasing their work to tens of thousands of Zoo members and guests at the Naturally Inspired Art Show, selected artists will be given a $100 stipend.

A panel of distinguished judges will select from the applicant group fifteen artists to participate.
Selections will be juried based on creativity, integrity of work, sensitivity to and understanding of the subject.

For consideration in the Naturally Inspired event, please submit the following:
• Brief letter stating interest in the Naturally Inspired event;
• Biographical resume;
• The Naturally Inspired Paint Out Entry Form;
• Three (3) examples of recent work (slides, photos, color reproductions, or digital images).
Each image must contain the artist’s name, title, medium, size and date;
• Entry applications must be submitted by 5pm on Monday, March 15.

Event Details:
The artist may choose any area, plant or animal of the Zoo or White River Gardens that inspires them—from roses in the DeHaan Tiergarden to elephants in the Plains Biome. Finished pieces will be donated to the Zoo and can be turned in that day or by end of day Tuesday, May 4. Subsequently, the finished works of art will be framed (if needed) and go on display as the Naturally Inspired Paint Out Exhibit in the White River Gardens from June-August 2010 Each piece of art will be silent auctioned as a fundraiser for the Zoo.

Naturally Inspired Paint Out Day: May 1 (8:30am start)
• Artists will be responsible for bringing supplies on Zoo grounds.
• Artists must stay on main pathways.
• A box lunch will be provided to artists participating in the event.
• Artwork should be no smaller than 12” x 12” and no larger than 24” x 36”.
• Artwork may be turned in by 4:30pm or taken home and returned by Tuesday, May 4.

Naturally Inspired Art Show: June 1-August 25
Naturally Inspired Art Show exhibition, in partnership with The Great Frame Up of Indianapolis,
will hang in the Schaefer Rotunda of White River Gardens.
Silent Auction & Artist’s Reception: August 26; 5:30-7:30pm

Artists will receive two (2) complimentary tickets to the Naturally Inspired Silent Auction

Artist’s Reception presented by The Great Frame Up. Artists will be encouraged to mingle with
members, donors and guests and discuss their artwork.

Naturally Inspired Paint Out

Congratulations to Artist Member Casey Jo Ailes for being accepted to participate in this year's Naturally Inspired Paint Out at the Indianapolis Zoo. Casey will be painting from 10 - 4 (or longer if the weather is nice) on May 2.

Once again, the Indianapolis Zoo will be the site of a unique art experience. Selected artists from around Indiana will be on grounds at the Zoo and White River Gardens on May 2 painting
en plein air
their favorite subjects from the natural world. Artists are free to choose any subject they like, from the beautiful flowers and butterflies in the Gardens to the majestic giraffes and elephants at the Zoo. The public is invited to come and witness the artists at work on grounds!

The finished paintings will be on display in the Schaefer Rotunda at the Gardens from May 29-August 27, then the works will be auctioned off at the Naturally Inspired Paint Out Reception on August 27 with all proceeds benefitting the Zoo. Information on reserving your spot at the Reception will be available later this year. Cost is $10 for Zoo members & guests and $25 for non-members. This event is presented in partnership with The Great Frame Up of Indianapolis.
